Jurmala Beach is a gem along the Latvian coast, stretching an impressive 24km!
It’s super clean with perfectly smooth golden sand, making it ideal for long strolls—it’s like walking on a giant fluffy cloud!
The beach was a little windy when I visited in mid-October, so don’t forget your windbreaker. No one wants a bad hair day at the beach, right?
I loved the activities available; people were playing volleyball and there’s always a spot for sunbathing. But if you’re looking for waves to surf, you might be disappointed – the water is calm, perfect for a relaxing dip.
Getting there is a breeze. A minibus from Riga will have you on the beach in about 30 minutes for just €2. I took the train instead, and the scenic ride was a treat!

A Beautiful Organ Experience
When I stepped into Riga Cathedral, the first thing that caught my attention was the magnificent organ with 7,000 pipes. Can you imagine playing a tune with that? I felt like I was in an episode of ‘Musical Giants’!
Attending a short concert during the Christmas celebrations was a delightful treat. For just 15 euros, you get to enjoy the music, and kids can attend for free. Why pay for tickets twice when you can combine both sightseeing and acoustics?
History and Awe
This stunning church dates back to the 13th century and showcases an incredible mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture. The interior may seem simple, but those stained glass windows? They’re like kaleidoscopes of color!
Make sure to wander around the cloisters too. Although they hold fascinating artifacts like old cannons, I did find the lack of information a bit puzzling. What’s a cannon doing here, anyway?
Bring the Kids!
Visiting with kids? You’ll be happy to know there’s a playground in the garden and a dedicated room for little ones inside the church. My kids had a blast! Just beware of the bathroom queues—they’re longer than my last road trip!
The ticket is only 5 euros for entry, so it might just be worth adding Riga Cathedral to your travel list. You never know; you might see me trying not to trip over my own feet while listening to that awe-inspiring organ!

On the bright side, there’s a shopping center nearby with lots of shops and cafes. Need a snack before your train? This place has got you covered. Plus, the trains are quite punctual, which is more than I can say for my morning schedule sometimes!

The Zinātņu Akadēmija, or the Academy of Sciences in Riga, is quite a sight, especially from its viewing platform. For a small fee, I took a lift almost to the top and walked up to the observation deck. The sunset was dreamy, and the full moon view? Simply magical!
Don’t be deceived by its exterior; it seems a bit closed off. Once inside, there’s a friendly kiosk ready to sell you a ticket. It’s 6 euros, a little steep, but the views over the city are totally worth it. The Soviet-style architecture adds an interesting backdrop, and yes, there’s even a toilet at the top!
As I stood there, gazing at the city, I thought, “Why spend 8 euros when I could do it for 6?” So, if you’re in Riga, don’t miss this stunning viewpoint. Just don’t forget your camera; you’ll want to capture that view!

17. KGB Building, Riga, Latvia
Brīvības iela 61, Centra rajons, Rīga, LV-1010, Latvia Open in Google Maps Photo Credit to Владимир Новиков
The KGB Building in Riga is a bit of a time capsule, showcasing the chilling past where political prisoners faced harsh realities. Taking a guided tour is a must—who else can joke about such dark history and still keep you engrossed?
I recommend booking tickets in advance; those tours fill up faster than you can say “Siberian labor camp!” My guide was fluent in English and clearly passionate, making the experience richer. If you don’t have a guide, you might misplace key details while wandering through the eerie interrogation rooms.
Walking through the original cells gave me chills! It serves as a sober yet eye-opening reminder of the past. Add this to your Riga agenda—just tread carefully in those halls; you never know who might be watching!
